Introduction to Handfasting

Handfasting is a beautiful, ancient tradition that symbolizes the binding of two lives in love. Originating from Celtic roots, this ritual involves gently tying the couple’s hands together with ribbons or cords to represent their union — hence the phrase “tying the knot”!

Whether you’re drawn to its romantic history or looking for a meaningful addition to your ceremony, handfasting is a powerful way to express your commitment in a deeply personal and symbolic way. It can be spiritual, secular, traditional, or modern — it’s all about what feels right for you. Let’s create a moment that’s truly yours.

Introduction to Wedding Ceremonies Officiated by a Celebrant

When selecting handfasting cord colours, couples often choose colours based on:

  • Personal significance: A colour that holds special meaning for them individually or as a couple.
  • Cultural or spiritual beliefs: Colours that align with their heritage or spiritual practices.
  • Aesthetic preferences: Colours that match the wedding theme, surroundings, or the couple’s favourite shades.
  • Meaning: Reflecting aspects of the relationship such as love, growth, trust, and harmony.

Some couples choose to incorporate multiple colours into the handfasting cords, each representing a different aspect of their union. For example, they might use red for passion, blue for loyalty, and green for growth, intertwining them to symbolize the balance of those qualities in their relationship.

Ultimately, the colour of the handfasting cords should be something that resonates with the couple’s journey together, creating a meaningful and lasting symbol of their commitment.

An introduction to handfasting colours

it is your personal choice and preference for the choice of cords or ribbons that are used for your handfasting. You may use fabrics from the wedding dress/tie/waistcoat/bridesmaids dresses or use a colour that is significant in some way. Many couples keep their handtied ribbons or cords as a memento of their special day.
